Zed comes from the creators of Atom, rebuilt in Rust with GPU rendering, and the speed difference is real — it opens instantly and never stutters, even on very large files.
Collaboration is built in rather than bolted on: shared editing sessions, channels and voice, plus AI assistance that stays out of the way until asked. It rewards developers who found VS Code sluggish.
The editor is free and open source; optional paid plans cover hosted AI and collaboration extras, so you only pay if you want them.
